Work out your bike's real km per litre from two fill-ups, and compare it with the maker's claim.

  1. 1. Fill the tank to full and write down the odometer reading.
  2. 2. Ride normally until the tank is low (the longer, the more accurate).
  3. 3. Fill to full again at the same pump, and note the litres and the new odometer reading.

How it's calculated

This is the tank-to-tank method. Fill the tank to full, ride, then fill to full again. The litres you put in the second time are exactly what you used for the distance between the two readings.

Mileage = (second odometer − first odometer) ÷ litres at the second fill.

For a steadier number, measure over a longer distance and use the same pump, filling to the same level both times. Your figure reflects your own traffic, load and riding style, which is why it rarely matches the maker's test figure exactly.
