How it's calculated

BRTA charges one total at registration that already includes the registration fee with VAT, the RFID number plate, the digital registration certificate and the first two years of road tax.

We use the two bands most BRTA counters and sellers quote: ঙ for bikes up to 125 cc (or 5 kw) (৳9,291) and চ for bikes above 125 cc (or 5 kw) (৳11,764). Electric bikes are banded by rated motor power (5 kW or less is the lower band).

After the first two years, you renew road tax every two years: ৳1,150 in the lower band, ৳2,300 in the higher one. Insurance is optional under the Road Transport Act 2018.

The charter also lists overlapping 100 cc bands (ক–ঘ, ৳9,313–৳12,073). If your BRTA office quotes those, the difference is a few hundred taka. The new front number plate (required from 15 November 2026) has no published fee yet, so it isn't included.

Do electric bikes need BRTA registration?

Yes, under the 2023 electric vehicle registration policy, through the same process as petrol bikes, for government-approved models. A motor of 5 kW or less is charged in the lower band.

Is bike insurance mandatory in Bangladesh?

No. Third-party insurance became optional under the Road Transport Act 2018. A pilot motor liability policy costs about ৳1,006 a year for a 150 cc bike.
